The left rod went screaming off, it was 10pm, and i just laid down in the sleeping bag, i jumped up and tipped the bivvy open, I had waited 30 odd hours for this carp, the spot i had chosen was on the far margin and i had been catapulting single boilies in that direction all day, around 9pm i had cast out a new rig, a nice heavy 2 Oz square lead a fox lead clip, and 6 inches of black rig tube, the hooklink was 12lb IQ2 by korda and a size chunky straight shank, size 6 fox hook. I bloody love those hooks! i had been using braid for2 a while, with some success, but i changed to the IQ2 and had a result. for the bait it was a homemade 18mm chicken curry and seed boilie, light brown in colour. I chopped the boilie in half, and rigged both halfs on the hair rig. Tied onto the hook, with a KD style, meaning that the bait was just at the bend of the hook.

This seemed to work a treat, thinking about it, this rig was 100% hand made, no shop bought lead core, no commercial hooklengths, and not even the bait was from the shop bought! thats a good feeling actually knowing that all the elements came together on the day, my own hook choice, my own hook length, my own leader...nice.
maybe thats the way forward, to try more homemade rigs. more homemade boilies and more diy lead clip rigs!

the fight lasted 20 minutes or so, and i thought i was done for, as i the fish made its way to the overhanging tree, and suddenly, my worst fears came to light, the line was stuck, i tried as hard as i could, but as gently as i could, nothing was moving, infact i slacked off a little pressure, and after a few minutes of tugging, the fish came free of the snag, i kept the pressure on, and when it came to landing the fish i had to jump back in the bivvy, and feel around for my head torch, bearing in mind it was 10pm, pitch black , no shoes on, and with the rod in left hand, with a 16.5 lb Linear carp on the other end! It was a couple more mintutes of fighting from the fish before i managed to get the carp's head up , and glide it in to my landing net, only 21 inch landing net, in the dark!! with the fish, safely netted, i let go of the rod, and sat down ,put my boots on, searched for the scales, and took a few pictures. I was glad i was the first angler, out of the 9 other on the water, to land a fish that night : )
